On the more established populace, over 20% of females and 10% of guys in America have endured kid maltreatment at their young age (Marchand Wolfe 133). These insights show that the issue of youngster sexual maltreatment is an issue that requires more concentration and a multi-dimensional way to deal with resolve. The motivation behind why I picked this theme is to build up a superior comprehension of the purposes for the predominance of the issue of youngster sexual maltreatment. Insights give figures that recommend that the individuals who are near the youngsters structure the biggest bit of the culprits. Measurements uncover that 90% of the culprits of youngster sexual maltreatment are those near the kids, 30% including relatives and 60% involving different colleagues, for example, companions. In picking this point, I try to reveal the fantasy behind the measurable figures that show that nearby individual from the network executes this wrongdoing (Marie 1-11). In my examination, I additionally expect to discover why most guardians wind up manhandling their cherished one as opposed to accepting the job of care suppliers. In doing as such, I mean to give a grounded stage from where the war against kid sex misuse can be propelled. Along these lines, it is conceivable to give an answer for a di fficult that has continued long enough in the general public and endeavors to determine the issue have gotten ineffective. Prior to my exploration, I expected that dominant part of the culprits of kid sexual maltreatment are outsiders who are obscure to the people in question. However when Shakespeare took it close by, to adjust the tangled trap of camouflage and sentiment into As You Like It, he changed a great part of the accentuation, by both modifying and including characters. Rosalynde is a festival of affection; As You Like It, a philosophical talk on adoration..   Shakespeare gets to the point, disposing of a great part of the preface to Rosalynde. We know about old Sir Roland de Boys (Lodge's John of Bordeaux) just through Orlando's initial discourse, not the all-encompassing deathbed assortment of axioms Lodge gives (however this shade of Polonius maybe impacts old Adam's indulgent style). In like manner, the all-encompassing ruminations are cut totally or, for the timberland scenes, consolidated into more tightly exchange. Cabin's fabulous competition, with the jousting ability of the unknown Norman (proto-Charles) happens offstage, and we see just a wrestling match. Cabin's usurper favors Rosader after the competition, however Shakespeare's Frederick rejects Orlando for his parentage and Oliver plots all the more rapidly against his sibling, further extracting the plot-perambulations of the source and evacuating the long periods of strain and compromise that plague Saladin and Rosader.   In any case, Shakespeare additionally takes care to help his reprobates, more in the soul of a fun loving parody than Lodge's occasionally terrible peaceful. His Charles is moderately blameless, beguiled by Oliver as opposed to entering enthusiastically into his compensation (as the Norman does with Saladin). Oliver, thusly, isn't such a tireless enemy as Saladin: he has no sidekicks to help with authoritative up Orlando, he doesn't so abuse his sibling before us as occurs in Lodge's peaceful. Indeed, even the usurper Duke, Torismond/Frederick, doesn't oust his own little girl in Shakespeare's play (just criticizing her with You are a dolt). What's more, he isn't murdered fighting toward the finish of the play, yet rather changed over to a sacred life, in much a similar destiny that Lodge's Saladin plans for himself in regret ([I shall] wend my way to the Holy Land, to end my years in the same number of excellencies, as I have spent my childhood in devilish vanities. (p.273)).   Conversely, Shakespeare obscures his legends: they are not all the happy, peaceful society Lodge paints. Celia's single Is it not a foul flying creature that debases its own home? (p. 245) ahead of schedule in Rosalynde turns into Celia's progressively expanded lecture toward the finish of IV. junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-60464991976887751092020-07-10T19:11:00.001-07:002020-07-10T19:11:02.257-07:00Using FLA Doe 4th Grade Essay Samples to Help Teach Students How to Write EssaysUsing FLA Doe 4th Grade Essay Samples to Help Teach Students How to Write EssaysThe reason I feel this is a good idea is because the teacher will be able to use the Fla Doe 4th grade essay samples in their own teaching style. Let's face it, teachers don't always have the best writing skills, and we can see that from the way they use their topics and examples. They just don't know how to deal with writing. It's more than just reading the topic or example and thinking about the problem. We need to find a way to connect with the student by using what they are trying to get across and trying to explain it. In the end, it's important that you do this by giving them examples, letting them experience the topic, and giving them information that they can find useful and more importantly a place to put it in their essay.Teaching these skills is really important for good students. You want to make sure they can remember the information and apply it to the exam. As I said, I believe teaching the students these skills through our means is very important, especially when teaching younger students. The problem is that most teachers don't have this ability or know how to properly practice it, so when the subject comes up and they need help from the students, it doesn't come.It just goes straight out of their hands. But you can give them ideas to use, or put your experiences into a sentence to add to the basis of your exam questions. I believe that students that know how to put together a good essay can usually understand the exam material better than those that have little experience at writing an essay. My teacher did this for me when I was in 4th grade, and it helped me out in the long run. It made it easier for me to understand and write my own essays, and more importantly I remember more. It made it easy for me to read and even remember what was being said.I can remember the first paragraph from the introduction of the book that I read, as well as the first paragraph on the topic of the chapter. It made the whole experience easier, and we needed to keep it that way.I would definitely suggest using these FLA Doe 4th grade essay samples. They were developed by a person who is certified in her field, and with great information on the subject. They are one of the best resources for teaching students how to write an essay, and the teachers who use them can also have the confidence to create their own great works that they can share with other students. junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-44674295108940470462020-05-20T01:12:00.001-07:002020-05-20T01:12:09.064-07:00The Twelve Tables Essay - 1457 Words The Twelve Tables were the first laws ever written down and shown to the public in Ancient Rome. The Twelve Tables were displayed in the Roman Forum or marketplace. The Twelve Tables were also the earliest surviving writings of Ancient Rome. As the Republic of Rome transitioned into an Empire, The Twelve Tables stood the test of time. As the empire began to fall, The Twelve Tables were spared. In the Middle Ages, Romeââ¬â¢s Twelve Tables were fairly similar to the laws of the time. In 1787, when the Constitution of the United States was being written, James Madison as well as the Constitution drafters looked to R ome as a model for their new government. Both of the set of laws underline a personââ¬â¢s individual rights. However, something was missing. Fresh in the minds of the new American citizens were violations of individual rights during the colonial and revolutionary periods. Several states made their ratification of the 1787 Philadelphia Constitution contingent on adding a Bill of Rights. This would more explicitly, outline individual freedoms of a person The First Congress of the United States, therefore, on September 25, 1789, proposed twelve amendments. The founding fathers dipped into the Roman past another time. The Twelve Tables clearly affected and motivated the writers of The Constitution to copy the laws of the Romans. Answer: Introduction Strategic analysis helps in the in-depth analysis of an organization for understanding its strategic position. It also helps in searching for the answers that arise in the internal environment of an organization like the inquiry about the present business environment, what are the available options and the process to develop the competencies for meeting the changes in the environment of the business. These questions help the organization to match its development and growth objectives with the existing reality of the environment of business (Rothaermel 2015). The decisions should be based on close analysis of the markets and products and not on blind optimism to match the reality with the objectives of the organization (Hill, Jones and Schilling 2014). This assignment will conduct the strategic case analysis of a large company based in UAE named Almarai for providing the company with the recommendations for improved long-term performance. Almarai is a public food industry that was established in 1977 in partnership with the Irish agri-foods. Almarai is regarded as the worlds largest vertically integrated dairy company with the products like dairy, juices, yogurt, infant formula, poultry and bakeries in UAE (Cummins 2016). The company underwent a drastic business change in 2005 as it transformed from a privately owned company to a company that is publicly listed with over 70,000 shareholders. A further investigation of the strategic analysis of the organization will be conducted in the commencing sections of the assignment (Sahoo 2016). Strategic analysis of the organization Political- Almarai is affected to a great extent by the import law and governments relations with foreign countries. Government regulations and policies regarding agricultural products have impacted the decisions of farmers to keep livestock sufficient to meet the needs of e company. The agreement on the Health Check has led to the obligation of abolishing UAE milk quotas in 2015. The agreement has also put forward measures for preparing the UAE dairy product industry for the situation. Any deal to be made must be unbiased and has to consider UAEs interest, especially in relation to agriculture (Nagy 2016). Economic- better standard of living, growing level of population and altering dietary prototype in UAE have lead to increase in food demand. However, prices are found to have fallen after a time frame of record commodity prices in early 2008 and early 2007. This fall in prices is crucial since the world economy is found to be facing a major downturn as a result of an amalgamation of adverse macroeconomic factors. Nevertheless, the medium-term projection for dairy products are good, and this is vital for the profitability of almarai (Sadi 2014). Social- the average size of dairy farms in UAE is 48.7 hectares. The age report of dairy producers indicates that it is the youngest of any farm in UAE. The majority population of the dairy farmers is of age less than 35 years. This implies that there is a scope of expectation for dairy food product companies, like almarai, as there are more chances of adopting new technologies in the farms, bringing benefits to the companies. Attitudes towards health complications, like obesity, can have a negative impact on the sales of dairy food products (Kumar and Prabhakar 2013). Technological- there is a need to bring developments in the product mix of almarai in order to combat the competitive pressure in relation to decrease in prices of food products and removal of price supports. Research and development would help the company in attaining a lesser level of dependency on low margin commodity products. It would also be a help to give emphasis on higher value added products (Aldosari and Atkins 2015). Environmental- almarai depends heavily on livestock and therefore the health and availability of livestock are a major concern for the company. Epidemics, plagues and other form of diseases affect livestock in UAE. Any such case of concern reduces the productivity of the company. Climatic conditions are a major influencing factor for the success of the product lines of food companies. As UAE is a warm country, the frozen products are successful (Pooch 2015). Legal- prices of food are found to be rising in the country in the recent past as a result of monopolistic activities by import facets. The liberalizing trade actions encompass 12 different sectors, including food product industry. Compliance of laws in relation to product labeling and advertising is crucial for Almarai as it produces dairy food products. It also needs to refrain from false claims regarding advertising. Food regulation bodies would have a role in the operations of the company. The products need to have nutritional information and specification of allergic products on them as a mandate of law (Tajkarimi, Ibrahim and Fraser 2013). Five-force analysis Bargaining power of suppliers- More diversification of the distribution channels implies that a single distributor will have less bargaining power. Almarai is considered as a difficult qualitative factor, and as a result, the competing institutions would be having a smooth time while overcoming it. Suppliers, when are dependent on high volumes, gives rise to less bargaining power since a producer can cut volumes and reduce the profit of the supplier. This process has the possibility to positively impact the organization. The factor that high level of completion between the possible suppliers leads to a reduction of prices to producers is a positive aspect for the organization (Eden and Ackermann 2013). Bargaining power of customers- when buyers are not much sensitive to prices there is an increase in the prices. Inelastic demand has a positive impact on the organization as there would be a reduction in costs. Since the customers cherish the products of Almarai, they would end up paying more for the products that are valuable to them. Leverage of limited bargaining promotes the profits of the organization. Limited buyer choice has a positive impact on the organization as customers provided with limited choices end up paying more for those that are available. Intensity of existing rivalry-government policies and set of regulations have the capacity to dictate the competition level of the industry, including this particular organization. Limited competition is beneficial for Almarai and adds to the value of the organisation. Almarai has a large industry size, and this permits multiple producers and firms, paving the way for prosperity without any need for stealing market share from other companies. There are few competitors of the company who compete for the similar resources and customers. This is, therefore, a beneficial factor for the organization (Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson 2012). The threat of substitutes- there are an inadequate number of substitutes for Almarai, implying that the customers do not have the opportunity to find other similar services and products fulfilling the needs they have in relation to the products they use. A limited number of substitutes is a high qualitative aspect that cannot be easily defended and competing companies would, therefore, have a tough time overcoming it. The threat of new competitors- weak distribution networks means that the expense to move around is more, and there is a chance that some goods may not get to the customers. Almarai has a strong distribution network that positively impacts the company. Customers are loyal to the branding Almarai has. The company has spent resources to build this strong brand, and this has resulted in fewer resources to compete for. The company has high capital requirements. This implies that the company needs to invest in huge amounts for competing in the present globalized market. The company has high sink costs that make it difficult for any competitor to enter the market in an effective manner. Almarai has a strong brand name that has been established over the years. Competitors of the company will therefore have to improve their branding if they want to have a strong competition with this company. Advanced technologies applied by the operations of the organization are a highly advantageous factor that the competitors need to build up (people.stern.nyu.edu 2016). SWOT analysis Strengths- Almarai has a multiple numbers of positive aspects that make the company an emergent leader in the industry it belongs to. The company has a robust and professional management team that can handle any critical challenge when it poses a threat to the profit of the company. The well recognized and strong branding is another point of strength for the company. The company has diversified products, like bakery and fruit juices, which make it appealing to the consumers. The company bears high average yield per resource used, bringing in benefit to the company. Committed investments in high-class dairy farming, integrated set-up, state-of-the-art processing units together with a strong network of distribution make up the most remarkable features of the operations of the company. The company focuses on innovation of new products and the packaging process, resulting in increased coverage. Extreme climatic conditions support the high consumption of liquids, thereby increasing the sa les of the liquid products. The huge population base translates into huge demand in the local area. The reduced labor costs, skilled workforce, experienced business setups, high rate of growth, higher operating margins are the other strengths of the company (Johnson et al. 2013). Weaknesses- one of the significant weaknesses of almarai is the high business operations concentration in the Riyadh region. The balance sheet of the company is moderately leveraged, implying an issue to be given immediate attention. Outside Saudi Arabia, there is no provision for production facilities set up by the company. This limits the chances of expansion outside Saudi Arabia. The turnover ratio of employees is unsystematic and high, reported at around 155. This has a negative impact on the company. The sector that the company operates in is highly reliant on emigrant labours. It also depends on to a large extent on the import of feed stocks and raw materials (Serkin 2015). Opportunities- increasing market share proves to be a good opportunity for the company to gain more profits in future. The company can consider venturing into product lines it has not got involved into yet. Geographic expansion of the companys operations to the Middle East and North African countries would be a positive step taken for bringing benefits to the company at large. The company must emphasize on the development of the fruit juice and dairy products as a drastic change in the consumer behavior is noticed in the recent past. Consumers are becoming highly health conscious, and this would likely increase the demand for health-conscious food products (Lasserre 2012). Threats- appreciation of major currencies, including Euro, can lead to the increase of feed stock cost, thereby translating into lower margins. The reason for this is that Saudi Riyal is pegged to the dollar. Government restrictions, when imposed on the price of retail foods, become a threat to the profitability of the company. The company suffers low margins on sales with hypermarkets and supermarkets contributing around 20% of the revenues. Possible loss of investment as a result of a failure of Zain KSA operations adds to the threats the company has. Rising costs of raw materials, growing competition and changes in price are the other threats the company suffers (Mahajan 2012). Stakeholder analysis Almarai is one of the largest food and beverage manufacturer and distributor in Middle East. Individuals, groups or organizations are affected by what an organization does. The effect may be on that particular organization as well. In this manner they are said to have an interest or stake in the decisions of the organization. Stakeholders are both internal and external who together help in having a smooth functioning of the operations of the organizations. The internal stakeholders of Almarai include the employees of the organization at all levels and managers and supervisors. The external stakeholders include the standard agencies, the government, the customers, and the local community in which the organization operates. One of the most important internal stakeholder groups for Almarai is the employees. The food industry depends on expertise people able to manufacture food products that are hygienic and good quality. Keeping in mind the importance of the employees the company promot es better job security, training program and other beneficial initiatives. Stakeholder engagement is enhanced by strategic consultancy, design initiatives and content development. Ethical values cover all stakeholders; those are the shareholders, consumers and employers. Values are based on transparency, fairness, respect, integrity and trust (Grain 2012). Addressing competitive advantages: innovation, quality, efficiency and customer responsiveness The four main building blocks of competitive advantage are innovation, quality, efficiency and customer responsiveness. These four factors when considered together with each other creates value and generates high profitability for the organization (Hatch and Howland 2015). Almarai needs to give emphasis on all the four factors as an amalgamation for getting the best benefits and having a sustained competitive advantage. The efficiency of Almarai can be increased by having a standardized process, thereby boosting the productivity of the employee. The economics of the scale in purchasing would also be boosted by a standardized process. Both of these would be an advantage to the company by lowering the costs. Standardized processes also would help in ensuring reliable quality. The quality of food sold by almarai is reliably dependable. It needs to bring improvement in the quality of food in order to maintain the value for customers. The company needs to take steps for raising the percei ved quality of the food by using milk that is reliable in its quality. Customer responsiveness can be demonstrated by the shift towards healthier meals. A decision to offer drinks of more high quality would also draw attention of the customers. Innovation in the food products can be brought through a strong research and development process. The company needs to build up a more efficient research and development team for gathering valuable research data from food industry across the world and incorporating them in its own production process (Katsioloudes and Abouhanian 2016). Strategic alliances beneficial of the organization Almarai must continue to see out relationships with other agencies and partners that can be a source of enhancement and growth for the organization. The company must seek eligible partners who are aligned with the mission and vision of Almarai and are committed to the enrichment of the consumers served by almarai. It is desirable that the company works closely with the farmers, livestock producers, suppliers at a regional collaborative platform. Positive change can be driven by working closely with the strategic partners (Khan et al. 2013). Fuller et al. (2016) outline the means by which strategic alliances can be made strong. First, early meaningful accomplishments are crucial for cross-partner team unity and morale. Second, it is significant to develop objectives that are out of the box. Thirdly, agencies need to have cost expectations that are realistic. Lastly, it is necessary to undertake only the critical few alliances for driving success. By these methods, the organization can continue to remain the efficient and lean organization it is that is effective in minimizing the duplication with regional bodies. Globalization as applied to the organization The world has witnessed significant changes since the beginning of the 21st century and last decade has seen the rapid transformation in technology, money, ideas and tastes of consumers due to globalization. Globalization is making an impact on all industries as it brings along opportunities, challenges and competition. To overcome the coming challenges and embrace the opportunities, industries must respond swiftly to the changes. For Almarai, globalization implies how effectively it embraces new things and responds to possible approaches and solutions to challenges for remaining competitive. In order to be on the safer side, the company needs to adjust the ways thing are done, the production and resources used. Reorganization of the operations would be a good move to remain in pace with globalization. Food products are to be manufactured that meet the value chain demands, the shift of consumer choices and preferences and enhanced consumer consciousness. Centralized, efficient and mo dernized dairy farming would drive the efficiency of the company. The environment footprint of farms is to be reduced. Using advanced technology for packaging and processing would drive down costs but maintain good food safety levels. The needs of the consumers are to be understood, and food products are to be made for meeting their needs (Grunert and Traill 2012). Major problems faced by the company and possible challenges in future According to Kapferer (2012), the food manufacturing industry is the largest industry in the world at present. The food industry is facing many challenges at the present time, the main issues being powerful retailers, fickle consumers, stringent food safety regulations and more. The biggest challenge that the company faces is from the consumers side. Consumers are avoiding the centre of store products at large in the recent times. This becomes an issue for traditional packaged food companies like Almarai. Consumers are wanting what they feel are healthier products (de Boer and Schsler 2016). Food companies like almarai have been suffering a dip in sales as consumers find it beneficial to buy less from the center store shelves. Consumers feel that fresh products are to be consumed more and therefore they thrive to buy food products after judging some parameters. Consumers are not focused on purchasing food products that are fit for their diet as before. The present scenario reflects t hat consumers are conscious of taking food products that enable them to cut down their calories and fat. They are now motivated to buy those products that are aligned with the well-being and health. This includes avoiding products with artificial ingredients. Almarai has the challenge of adapting to this trend and withstands the pressure of bringing changes in the types of products it manufactures. Major organizations across the world, like WHO and FDA, are moving out against the high sugar intake by the general population. They are recommending less calorie intake for health benefits and avoiding the chances of major health complications. The consumers are therefore avoiding foods that are high in sugar (Saguy 2016). The issue faced by the company is that many food products of Almarai have high sugar content. The challenge for the company is to continue producing sweet products that are not high on sugar content. Almarai is facing a challenge in bringing new products to the market that align with the emerging trends of the consumers within a specific time frame. There is a need to create new and relevant products and move them through research and development, testing process and marketing for retailing them on an effective basis. The main concern is that by the time some of the products are out in the market, the trends may be found to be changing. In addition, companies need to think about the designing and packaging of the products as for making them more appropriate and convenient for consumption. Consumer is moving away from the traditional way of having meals, and Almarai may have a major challenge in adopting to similar innovations in the near future. Almarai can be facing competition from more supple companies, making it difficult to stand out in the market. Conclusion The global demand for food products, especially dairy products is increasing, and the industry is expected to grow in the coming years. In order to maintain its supremacy in this industry, Almarai must take up certain measures that would help it maintain its position in the market. Almarai must boost its sales and focus on increasing its customer loyalty. The supply chain must improve its effectiveness and efficiency. Global competitiveness can be built by making the supply chain work together for adding values to the products. Together retailers, processers, and farmers must build strong relationships that are based on evenhanded value creation. The performances of the concerned departments are to be measured in terms of environmental sustainability. Technical efficiency improvement can be beneficial for the production of almarai. The company needs to be more responsive to the ever-changing needs of the consumers. More collaboration with the concerned stakeholders would also be a be neficial step for the organization. Almarai is always known to be leading the way for production innovation as it has emerged as a leader who can control the large market share in the area of operations. The belief of business analysts is that the company is commended to apply three branched strategies as reflected through the growth initiatives. Expanding business outside Saudi Arabia can have a possibility of challenges to operate successfully in those markets. Nevertheless, since the company has a strong brand value and ability to remain a market leader, the company can be surely said to be well positioned and ready for taking up challenges and emerging as a leader. The company has adopted several profit maximizing and growth-oriented initiatives in the past, compelling analysts to have a positive overview of the company. The theory that all art is imitation is a good starting point to deciphering what exactly art is, but it is not the cornerstone, contrary to Plato, Aristotle, and Batteuxs beliefs may be.Batteauxs Single Principle of the fine arts suggests that all art is imitation of beautiful nature conveyed through colours, relief, and attitudes. An obvious counter argument to that theory is music. As one of the fine arts Music in general is not imitative.Possibly earlier chanting rituals could be related to imitative animal sounds, as Carroll suggests, and even Rap artists from today such as DMX might fit in this category; who imitate animal sounds in their music, whether it be by barking, or even cooing like a pigeon. But to suggest that symphonies that were in existence at the time of Batteauxs text are imitative is absurd. Most of the early theories on art are irrelevant to todays work, the definitions dont seem to have a very long shelf life as the art ists are constantly trying to out do the philosophers. Its almost like a game.To classify all art under one category is a daunting and in my opinion futile task.Consider all the different genres of art, from music to painting to sculpture to dance to film, and then from there, divide those into their own respective genres, abstract, symbolist, surrealist, et al. There cannot be a single definition for all forms of art today. In each philosophys time, Im sure they were fairly accurate in their theory of their art, but to think of relating these primitive theories to todays art is absurd to say the least. Neo-representationalism is the closest theory of art in thefirst readings. To say that art has to be about something is very accurate, art has a purpose, it is created for a reason, therefore it is about something. To be able to classify such difficult art pieces such as ready- junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-79414004409544408522020-03-17T05:35:00.001-07:002020-03-17T05:35:02.938-07:00Why did Tunisia and Egypts governments fall Will they become democraciesWhy did Tunisia and Egypts governments fall Will they become democracies For several weeks, between December 2010 and March 2011, the world was treated to a show of uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. Unlike the common military coup de tars, citizens of Tunisia and Egypt successfully depose long-ruling dictators through civil demonstrations. It all started in Tunisia in December 2010 when citizens joined a nationwide mass action protesting against President Zine El Abidine Ben Aliââ¬â¢s oppressive rule.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Why did Tunisia and Egyptââ¬â¢s governments fall? Will they become democracies? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More A few weeks later, Egyptians joined the dance protesting against President Hosni Mubarak oppressive rule. The results in both countries were the same; citizens through mass action managed to oust long ruling dictators. From an outward look, these countries seemed more developed compared to most African countries. Yet, their citizens bec ame so frustrated and desperate, so much so that they decided to fight for their own course. Therefore, the question is, why did these governments fall? The answer remains the same for both; lack of democracy characterized by dictatorship and oppression. We know of successful non-democratic countries like Iran and China, but the former, their rule was too much of authoritarian. Fortunately, citizens managed to bring down governments they believed were the main obstacle to their democracy. Nevertheless, do these events mark the beginning of democracy in Tunisia and Egypt? This essay, therefore, seeks to answer these two important questions. Reasons for the fall of Tunisia and Egyptââ¬â¢s governments Both Egypt and Tunisiaââ¬â¢s governments had several similarities. To begin with, they both had the longest serving presidents in their history. Whereas President Ben Ali had ruled Tunisia for 23 years, President Hosni Mubarak had ruled Egypt for 30 years until the time of the fall of their governments. Their reign was characterized by dictatorship leaving very little space for democracy. However, their reign encouraged development of their nations, no wonder they enjoyed the support of the West. Nevertheless, why did these long-lived governments fall? The fall of Tunisia and Egyptââ¬â¢s governments was caused by both political and economic factors. Of great importance to this essay are the political reasons as discussed below. As had been mentioned, the lack of democracy is to blame for the fall of both Egypt and Tunisiaââ¬â¢s governments. Democracy in practice denotes a form of government in which all citizens play an active role in the decision making process (Held, p. 12).Advertising Looking for research paper on government? Democracy is more than just holding elections (Pipes, par. 2). It demands protection of the minority rights, enhancement of individual and political freedoms, independence of judiciary, political party pluralism, and the development of civil society (Pipes, par. 2). Did Tunisia and Egyptââ¬â¢s governments reflect these principles? Although Tunisia was a constitutional republic that encouraged representation of citizens through multi-party democracy, it had strong characteristic of dictatorship that had negative impact on human rights and freedoms. On the other hand, Egypt was a semi-presidential republic that maintained one-party rule. There were several concerns relating to democracy in both countries. First, both Tunisians and Egyptians expressed their concerns about lack of free elections. In Egypt, there was a growing concern about power inheritance. Credible sources reported that Hosni Mubarak started grooming his son, Gamal Mubarak, way back in 2000 to be his successor after his retirement in 2010 (Sobelman, p. 31). This arrangement was met with sharp criticism from political groups in the country, the majority of which were illegal given the lack of political party pluralism in the country. The possibility of power inheritance triggered the demand for multi-party politics to ensure that elections were free and fair. To the contrary, President Hosni Mubarak amended the constitution to ensure that Gamal would be the only presidential candidate (Sobelman, p. 34). Tunisia, on the other hand, had political party pluralism, but its elections were never free and fair, a strategy that made President Ben Ali remain in office for as long as he wanted. Democracy dictates fair and competitive elections that grant the people a chance to elect the leaders they consider best fit for the office. Power inheritance is an insult to democracy and with the electi ons first approaching and Hosni Mubarakââ¬â¢s health deteriorating; Egyptians would not want to have the same experience as Syria hence they decided to use the power of the majority to change the course of their politics just as Tunisians did. Second, both governments curtailed political freedoms. In Egypt, this was archived through the extension of emergency law. Enacted in 1967 following the Six-Day War, the law suspended individual freedoms including freedom of assembly and freedom of expression (Shehata, par. 23). Under the emergency law, police force was allowed to use excessive force, media houses could be censored, and the government could imprison individuals indefinitely without any proper reason (Shehata, par. 23). This resulted into increased police brutality, and long-term detention without trial. For instance, during a parliamentary election in December 2010, an estimated number of between 5,000 and 10,000 people were detained without trial (Press release, par. 7).Ad vertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Why did Tunisia and Egyptââ¬â¢s governments fall? Will they become democracies? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Police brutality was also widespread during Hosni Mubarakââ¬â¢s reign. According to the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, Egypt recorded 567 cases of police torture, including 167 deaths during the period between 1993 and 2007 (Staff writer, par. 7). With such breach of human rights, it was prudent that citizens would fight for their course. In Tunisia, despite being a multi-party country, Ben Aliââ¬â¢s government thwarted any effort by opposing political parties and civil society to check it. Anybody who criticized the government would risk being detained. President Ben Ali even enacted a ban on political parties deemed unsavory. Such measures curtailed various political freedoms and were a direct insult to democracy. Democracy demands freedom of ass ociation and expression. President Ben Aliââ¬â¢s government must have been too much of a dictatorship and thus oppressive to the citizens. This can explain why Bouaziziââ¬â¢s self-immolation spontaneously caused nationwide protests that resulted into the fall of Ben Aliââ¬â¢s government. Tunisiaââ¬â¢s government was sitting on a time bomb waiting to explode and Bouaziziââ¬â¢s self-immolation was like a switch on the circuit. Third, both governments grossly violated freedom of speech as provided for in democracy. President Hosni Mubarakââ¬â¢s reign was marked by frequent media censorship and detention of anybody who expressed any critical view on the operations of the government. This over restriction of the media denied the press a chance to report on governmentââ¬â¢s wrongdoings. The situation was the same in Tunisia. President Ben Aliââ¬â¢s government restricted media freedom through media regulation and censorships, despite the same government preaching pr ess freedom. Limiting a press is like denying citizens a right to information; a direct insult to democracy. Such levels of oppression must have been too much for citizens of these countries hence the witnessed uprisings that led to the fall of the oppressive governments. Last, Both Tunisia and Egyptââ¬â¢s governments were marred with corruption. Political corruption became the order of day in President Hosni Mubarakââ¬â¢s government with powerful businessmen allied to the ruling party rising to power and monopolizing Egyptââ¬â¢s business sector. As a result, they accumulated wealth and became the core players in Egyptââ¬â¢s economy. This created a perception among Egyptians that the nationââ¬â¢s wealth only benefited businessmen allied to NDP. In Tunisia, the situation was somehow similar. President Ben Ali and his first family ran the nationââ¬â¢s economy for their personal gain. President Ben Ali solely made all the key decisions concerning privatization and inv estment, despite the existence of well-defined liberal economic legislation in the country.Advertising Looking for research paper on government? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More As a result, his first family accumulated wealth in the key sectors of the economy leading to a perception that connections to the first family were necessary for business survival. In 2010, Egypt recorded a Corruption Perception Index of 3.1 whereas Tunisia had a CPI of 4.3 (Corruption Perception Index 2010, results table). The high level of corruption in Hosni Mubarakââ¬â¢s and Ben Aliââ¬â¢s governments angered citizens and hence, the fall of Tunisia and Egyptââ¬â¢s government. Prospects for democracy in Tunisia and Egypt Having outlined the underlying political causes of the fall of Tunisia and Egyptââ¬â¢s governments, I now shift my discussion to the future of these countries. The citizens nonviolently fought and defeated the governments they perceived oppressive and obstacles to their democracy. However, the question remains, could this be a new dawn in Arab world? Will these countries become democracies? From the recent uprisings, everyone would be quick to conclud e that Tunisia and Egypt have started a democratic journey and will soon become democracies. The demonstrations by citizens proved that they are democratic and are aware of their democratic rights. However, understanding the prospects for democracies in these countries requires a deeper understanding of the concept of democracy. From its definition, democracy is a fusion of two important ideologies, i.e., popular sovereignty and freedom (Mandelbaum, par. 3). Freedom as contained in democracy comes in three forms: political liberty, religious liberty, and economic liberty (Mandelbaum, par. 4). Here is where the challenge lays a head for both Egypt and Tunisia. Egypt is extremely Islam with well-organized Muslim groups that pose a threat to full democracy. For instance, Muslim Brotherhood is against religious liberty and rights of women. Should such extremists have access to power, then there will be very little room for liberty in Egypt (Benhenda, p. 10). Tunisia, on the other had, h as made some progress in protecting womenââ¬â¢s rights, but is still largely Islam hence may reject religious liberty. These countries may enjoy popular sovereignty exercised through free and fair elections, but popular sovereignty without liberty in not genuine democracy. As Pipes (2011) maintained, democracy is much more than just holding elections (par. 2). Moreover, the establishment of liberty requires such institutions as legal system with impartial courts (Mandelbaum, par. 7) that are unfortunately lacking in both Egypt and Tunisia. A true democracy would mean a complete overhaul of the countriesââ¬â¢ judicial system, which may take years to be achieved. Whether this will be possible is still unclear and we can only wait and see. Furthermore, the development of democracy requires free-market economy as have been witnessed in successful democracies in Asia and Latin America. Unfortunately, both Egyptââ¬â¢s and Tunisiaââ¬â¢s economies are based on capitalism, whereb y individualââ¬â¢s economic prowess is determined by his political connections contrary to free-market economy hence not fit for democracy (Mandelbaum, par. 10). Nevertheless, both Tunisia and Egypt have some prospects for democracy. The citizens of both countries have proved that they are democrats through the recent uprisings. Egypt does not have many ethnic inclinations or even natural resources that have been the major obstacle to democracy in most Arab countries hence its democratization would be easy. However, Tunisia, have more prospects for democracy than Egypt. First, Tunisian elite have been demanding for political reforms since 1970s. Second, Unlike Egypt, Tunisia has made significant progress in protection human rights especially womenââ¬â¢s rights. Third, the country has an extensive middle class that is well aware of their democratic rights hence a good foundation for democracy. Conclusion The uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt made a significant democratic step in t he Arab world. From political point of view, the demonstrations are largely attributed to the apparent lack of democratic space in these countries. As Marxists put it, a lack of democracy encourages thrive of all political vices hence an impetus for uprisings. The success of every nation requires existence of some level of democracy. However, whether Egypt and Tunisia will become democracies is a wait-and-see scenario. From the prevailing conditions, Tunisia has more prospects for democracy compared to Egypt. Over the years the business and organizational environment has increasingly become more and more complex. There has been an explosion in choices, options, opportunities and threats, requirements, data and information through IT systems. Organizations have understood the hidden cost of quality, errors, inventories associated with inefficient supply chain. These factors have led to the emergence of a new discipline of supply chain management. A supply chain is essentially managing the journey of inputs to the outputs along with all the associated activities having impact on cost, speed and quality of the output through the journey. Ganeshan & Harrison in their paper explains how traditionally there has been organizations within organizations, silos of functions / departments, each one having their own characteristic goals, many a time at conflict with the organizational goal, resulting in an inefficient supply chain marked by interface problems. The result of these factors is that there is not a single, integrated plan for the organization. Supply chain addresses these issues effectively. Coordination between the various players in the chain is key in its effective management. Cooper and Ellram [1993] compare supply chain management to a well-balanced and well-practiced relay team. Quality begins and ends with customers For any Quality Management System, customer requirement is the input and customer satisfaction is the desired output. The entire quality movement is based on simple but elegant Deming's PDCA cycle. First step in the quality journey is capturing customer requirement followed by design / modification of functions/systems for deployment and continuous improvement of the same through repetitive cycles of feedbacks. The customer experience is captured at Sainsbury's through well-placed mechanisms. Customer Insights group carries out the work of obtaining the true customer requirement by interacting with more than 4000 customers every month which includes obtaining the performance of competitors also in the area of customer satisfaction. Besides the regular channels of obtaining customer perception there is another mechanism to find out customer requirement, which involves trained auditors capturing the customer experiences in the store itself. The practice of interviewing customers in their homes is yet another valuable source of customer expectation determination. The information captured through these mechanisms form the inputs for the Quality Management systems and other operational instruments for delivering the quality products and services to the customers. So, this paper will focus on the American food major, McDonaldââ¬â¢s and will discuss the major successful strategies adopted by it to deal with international finance and investment issues, then evaluate its performance overall in relation to those financial issues and finally will pick up the potential challenges it could face in the 21st century in the financial segment of its functioning. à McDonaldââ¬â¢s, the worldââ¬â¢s largest chain of fast-food restaurants, went through ups and downs in its 60 years of functioning, in every aspect of the organization including the financial aspects. Financial aspects, which are the lifeline of any organization, needed to be handled or solved first for the organization to succeed or even survive. For the people of Europe the Americas was a place to prosper, worship in there own way, and expand there kingdoms. The only problem is that they attempted to settle in their own way and all failed dismally. The New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southern Colonies grew differently in various ways, but each with the same state of mind, ââ¬Å"do it our wayâ⬠. Examining the three sets of colonies will prove that they were all different in religion, government, and ways of expansion. New England was started for the search of religious freedom from persecution. Englandââ¬â¢s government required a strict attendance to the Anglican church. If a person were to refuse, holding separate services, they could be imprisoned and or fined! If the people didnââ¬â¢t take oath of supremacy to the king, they could be jailed for life. Since Charles I was head of the Anglican church what he said went; Charles removed all puritans ministers from his their pulpits. The puritans got fed up with all this persecution and as there ministers left to the new world they followed. One of the New England colonies was Rhode Island. After Roger Williams, a minister, challenged the Massachusetts policy time after time he was eventually banned from this land. In 1636 he purchased land in Narragansett bay and establishes providences. He created this society based on religious tolerance, separating state from church. After four more settlements were established Roger went to England, they got a charter, and established Rhode Island. His government was based on the principle of freedom of worship. They decide to start growing tobacco a huge cash crop, but cant because the lake of labors. The Indians which seemed to have quieted down rows up and massacres huge number people, thus ending the company and the charter being revoked. There are clearly many similarities and differences in overall religious, economical, and governmental origins in American colonies. Many colonies were founded for exclusive religious freedom However, many came to be motivated in by economy and profit. Also, the American colonies evolved from non-representative and elitist governments into a more democratic system, which is closer to the pure democracy of today. junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-59988674712710027602020-01-16T01:31:00.001-08:002020-01-16T01:31:03.765-08:00The Algarve is Portugal’s southern coastThe Algarve is Portugal's southern coast. Marrying into a prominent family in Maryland, he received an appointment to West Point from that state in 1838. Arriving at the academy, Sykes roomed with future Confederate Daniel H. Hill. Detail and discipline-oriented, he quickly took to military life though he proved a pedestrian student. Graduating in 1842, Sykes ranked 39th of 56 in the Class of 1842 which also included ââ¬â¹James Longstreet, William Rosecrans, and Abner Doubleday. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, Sykes departed West Point and immediately traveled to Florida for service in the Second Seminole War. With the end of the fighting, he moved through garrison postings in Florida, Missouri, and Louisiana. Mexican-American War In 1845, Sykes received orders to join Brigadier General Zachary Taylors army in Texas. Following the outbreak of the Mexican-American War the following year, he saw service with the 3rd US Infantry at the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. Moving south later that year, Sykes took part in the Battle of Monterrey that September and was promoted to 1st lieutenant. Transferred to Major General Winfield Scotts command the following year, Sykes participated in the Siege of Veracruz. As Scotts army advanced inland towards Mexico City, Sykes received a brevet promotion to captain for his performance at the Battle of Cerro Gordo in April 1847. A steady and reliable officer, Sykes saw further action at Contreras, Churubusco, and Chapultepec. With the conclusion of the war in 1848, he returned to garrison duty at Jefferson Barracks, MO. The Civil War Approaches Sent to New Mexico in 1849, Sykes served on the frontier for a year before being reassigned to recruiting duty. Returning west in 1852, he took part in operations against the Apaches and moved through posts in New Mexico and Colorado. Promoted to captain on September 30, 1857, Sykes participated in the Gila Expedition. As the Civil War neared in 1861, he continued on frontier duty with a posting at Fort Clark in Texas. When the Confederates attacked Fort Sumter in April, he was regarded in the US Army as a solid, uncompromising soldier but one who had earned the nickname Tardy George for his cautious and methodical manner. On May 14, Sykes was promoted to major and assigned to the 14th US Infantry. As the summer progressed, he took command of a composite battalion consisting entirely of regular infantry. In this role, Sykes took part in the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21. Strong in defense, his veterans proved key in slowing the Confederate advance after the Union volunteers wer e defeated. Sykes Regulars Assuming command of the regular infantry in Washington after the battle, Sykes received a promotion to brigadier general on September 28, 1861. In March 1862, he took command of brigade comprised largely of Regular Army troops. Moving south with Major General George B. McClellans Army of the Potomac, Sykes men took part in the Siege of Yorktown in April. With the formation of the Union V Corps in late May, Sykes was given command of its 2nd Division. As in the past, this formation largely consisted of US Regulars and soon became known as Sykes Regulars. Moving slowly toward Richmond, McClellan halted after the Battle of Seven Pines on May 31. In late June, Confederate General Robert E. Lee launched a counteroffensive to push Union forces back from the city. On June 26, V Corps came under heavy attack at the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek. Though his men were largely unengaged, Sykes division played a key role the following day at the Battle of Gaines Mill. In the course of the fighting, V Corps was compelled to fall back with Sykes men covering the retreat. With the failure of McClellans Peninsula Campaign, V Corps was transferred north to serve with Major General John Popes Army of Virginia. Taking part in the Second Battle of Manassas in late August, Sykes men were driven back in heavy fighting near Henry House Hill. In the wake of the defeat, V Corps returned to the Army of the Potomac and began pursuing Lees army north into Maryland. Though present for the Battle of Antietam on September 17, Sykes and his division remained in reserve throughout the battle. On November 29, Sykes received a promotion to major general. The following month, his command moved south to Fredericksburg, VA where it took part in the disastrous Battle of Fredericksburg. Advancing to support attacks against the Confederate position on Maryes Heights, Sykes division was quickly pinned down by enemy fire. The following May, with Major General Joseph Hooker in command of the army, Sykes division led the Union advance into the Confederate rear during the opening phases of the Battle of Chancellorsville. Pressing up the Orange Turnpike, his men engaged Confederate forces led by Major General Lafayette McLaws around 11:20 AM on May 1. Though he succeeded in pushing the Confederates back, Sykes was forced to withdraw a bit after being counterattacked Major General Robert Rodes. Orders from Hooker ended Sykes offensive movements and the division remained lightly engaged for the remainder of the battle. Having won a stunning victory at Chancellorsville, Lee began moving north with the goal of invading Pennsylvania. Gettysburg Marching north, Sykes was elevated to lead V Corps on June 28 replacing Major General George Meade who had taken command of the Army of the Potomac. Reaching Hanover, PA on July 1, Sykes received word from Meade that the Battle of Gettysburg had begun. Marching through the night of July 1/2, V Corps briefly paused at Bonnaughtown before pressing on Gettysburg at daybreak. Arriving, Meade initially planned to have Sykes take part in an offensive against the Confederate left but later directed V Corps south to support Major General Daniel Sickles III Corps. As Lieutenant General James Longstreet mounted an assault on III Corps, Meade ordered Sykes to occupy Little Round Top and hold the hill at all costs. Routing Colonel Strong Vincents brigade, which included Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlains 20th Maine, to the hill, Sykes spent the afternoon improvising a defense on the Union left after the collapse of III Corps. Holding off the enemy, he was reinforced by Major General John Sedgw icks VI Corps but saw little fighting on July 3. Later Career In the wake of the Union victory, Sykes led V Corps south in pursuit of Lees retreating army. That fall, he oversaw the corps during Meades Bristoe and Mine Run Campaigns. During the course of the fighting, Meade felt that Sykes lacked aggression and responsiveness. In the spring of 1864, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant came east to oversee the armys operations. Working with Grant, Meade assessed his corps commanders and elected to replace Sykes with Major General Gouverneur K. Warren on March 23. Ordered to the Department of Kansas, he assumed command of the District of South Kansas on September 1. Aiding in defeating Major General Sterling Prices raid, Sykes was superseded by Brigadier General James Blunt in October. Brevetted to brigadier and major generals in the US Army in March 1865, Sykes was awaiting orders when the war ended. Reverting to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1866, he returned to the frontier in New Mexico. Promoted to colonel of the 20th US Infantry on January 12, 1868, Sykes moved through assignments in Baton Rouge, LA, and Minnesota until 1877. In 1877, he assumed command of the District of the Rio Grande. On February 8, 1880, Sykes died at Fort Brown, TX. Following a funeral, his body was interred at the West Point Cemetery. A simple and thorough soldier, Sykes was remembered as a gentleman of the highest character by his peers. junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-41082670564335886602019-12-30T18:18:00.001-08:002019-12-30T18:18:03.777-08:00Comparing Oedipus Rex and King Lear Essay - 1478 Words Comparing Oedipus Rex and King Lear Oedipus Rex and King Lear are, as their titles announce, both about kings. These two plays are similar in theme and in the questions they pose to the audience. The kings in each play both fall from the pinnacle of power to become the most loathed of all classes in society; Oedipus discovers that he is a murderer and committer of incest, and Lear becomes a mad beggar. Misjudgments occur in both plays, and the same questions about the gods, fate, and free will are posed. In spite of these similarities, however, the final effects of these two plays differ greatly. For me, as I read Oedipus Rex again this fall, I experienced a sensation nearly of agony. Because I had already known theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In Oedipus Rex, there is nowhere for Oedipus to go but down. The active, decisive part of his life has already happened and is recounted in the play through flashbacks; now, however, there is nothing Oedipus can do about his own fate. He has already killed his father and had four children with his mother, and there is absolutely no way to change that. For that reason, there is a dreadful sense of the unavoidability of fate. Oedipus parents tried to get away from it but obviously failed miserably; so did Oedipus. their efforts at tricking fate only succeeded in creating the very circumstances they were trying to avoid. There is really no free will or choice, because in a way, their choices are fated to lead them, in the end, to exactly what they think they are avoiding. The line uttered by Creon, You can not judge unless you know the f acts (28) is telling. No one can judge correctly unless he has all the information; however, no one in this play has enough information to make a correct choice when it matters. Laius does not know that his son survived, so he thinks he is safe from his fate; in fact, by sending his son away, he deprives Oedipus of true knowledge of who his parents are and thus of the ability to make an effective decision himself about his fate. Without sufficient information, informed judgment is impossible, and this contributes to junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-43722813760799510372019-12-22T14:06:00.001-08:002019-12-22T14:06:03.312-08:00Child And Family Studies - 1039 Words In the Journal of Child and Family Studies, Tavassolie, Dudding, Madigan, Thorvardarson, and Winsler researched how perceived parenting styles between mothers and fathers can impact children behaviors as well as conflicts within the marriage. How two parents perceive the other partners parenting can cause issues in the marriage as well as how the kids handle it. The kids also react differently to parenting styles and this can impact their behavior. In the summary I discussed how Nick and Melissa parent their children. A set of questionnaires were given to the participants to complete. These included The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ), Preschool and Kindergarten Behavior Scales (PKBS), The Child Behavior C hecklist (CBCL), The Conflicts and Problem- Solving (CPS), and The Short Martial Adjustment Test (SMAT). The results from the research included that as mothers and fathers self-reported parenting styles differed more from each other, martial conflict increased (Tavassolie et al. 2016). In correlation to parenting styles and child behavior, the only significant relationships found were that parents self-perceived permissiveness increased, child externalizing behaviors also increased (Tavassolie et al. 2016). Child behavior problems are also affected on how the individual parent perceives their own parenting style. ââ¬Å"In general, as reported differences between the perception of oneââ¬â¢s own parenting style and the perception of the spouseââ¬â¢s style increase, so do most behavior problemsâ⬠(Tavassolie et al. 2016). As an analyst for a major brokerage, she was responsible for providing investment advice regarding companies in the retail industry, including Sears. She looked over the income statement, noting that net income grew by 39 percent over the previous year, despite a slight decrease in revenues (see Exhibit 1). Before long, however, she turned her attention to the Companyââ¬â¢s credit card receivables and allowance for uncollectible accounts (see Exhibit 2). In recent years, Sears had suffered heavy write-offs from uncollectible credit card accounts, as well as an expensive scandal caused by illegal collections procedures. These problems had depressed Searsââ¬â¢ stock price substantially from its peak in mid-1998. Had Sears overcome their credit card problems? BACKGROUND Sears, Roebuck and Co. was founded in 1886 as a retail mail-order business and grew rapidly by providing a wide range of products to people in rural areas who did not have access to large, well-stocked stores. We will write a custom essay sample on Bmw case or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The Company began to diversify into financial services in 1931, when it established Allstate Insurance Company. This diversification continued in the 1980s, as it acquired Dean Witter Reynolds and Coldwell Banker, and launched the Discover card. By 1990, however, Sears was struggling and the investment community was critical of its business strategy, which was derisively characterized as ââ¬Å"socks and stocks.â⬠Shareholder discontent drove the Company to a massive restructuring to refocus on its retailing roots. According to former CEO Edward Brennan, 1992 was a ââ¬Å"disastrous yearâ⬠in which the Company lost $3.9 billion, of which $3.1 billion was a charge related to the restructuring. By 1995, Sears had divested its financial services businesses and largely restructured its merchandising operations. The transformation of Sears was largely credited to Arthur Martinez, the former chairman of Saks Fifth Avenue, who joined the Company in 1992 as head of the merchandising group. His actions were swift and decisive. He immediately closed the unprofitable Sears Catalog, shut 113 Research Associate David Hoyt prepared this case under the supervision of Professor Karen K. A-165 p. 2 unprofitable stores, cut 50,000 jobs, and launched a five year, $4 billion capital investment program to renovate and update the stores. In 1993, he initiated an intensive marketing campaign, ââ¬Å"Come See the Softer Side of Sears,â⬠which was a hugely successful move to call attention to changes in the apparel division and attract women to the stores. Sears made a remarkable turnaround. From its massive 1992 loss, it recovered to post net income of $1.8 billion in 1995. Martinez was named Searsââ¬â¢ CEO in 1995 and was also recognized as Financial Worldââ¬â¢s CEO of the year. The stock price responded accordingly, increasing more than seven-fold from 1991 to mid-1997.1 By the late 1990s, however, problems had surfaced and the financial press had become critical. They questioned whether some components of the Martinez turnaround had backfired, most notably his strategy related to the Searsââ¬â¢ proprietary credit card, the Sears Card. THE SEARS CARD AND CREDIT CARD RECEIVABLES Prior to 1993, the only charge card that Sears accepted was the Sears Card. In order to attract new customers and prop up sagging store sales, Sears began accepting other major charge cards in 1993. While this helped improve sales, Sears lost the opportunity to collect interest on purchases made with other cards. To avoid a drop in profits from its own credit operations, Sears aggressively marketed the Sears Card, mailing out pre-approved card offers, hawking the card at tables positioned at store entrances and paying incentives to sales clerks for opening new accounts. Between 1993 and 1996, Sears issued 24 million new credit card accounts. In his Letter to Shareholders in the 1996 Annual Report, Martinez commented on the importance of the credit card program, stating that the ââ¬Å"Sears Card is one of the most important ways we form an alliance with our 50 million customer households. The availability of credit is critical to the ability of moderate-income families to finance the purchases they require. Despite rising delinquencies in the industry, we have a very strong and profitable credit portfolio.â⬠However, the new Sears Card users were not necessarily the best credit risks. Searsââ¬â¢ marketing of their credit card tended to attract customers that had trouble paying their bills. Those that could get cheaper credit elsewhere used bank cards with low ââ¬Å"teaserâ⬠rates and incentives. These factors, combined with an increase in delinquencies and average balances, were cause for concern (see Exhibit 3). By late 1997, the average Sears Card balance was more than three times that carried by J.C. Penny Co. cardholders and delinquencies exceeded the industry average by two percentage points. Searsââ¬â¢ drive to issue more cards, and the lax credit policies that were needed to increase cardholders at such a rapid rate, eventually caught up with them. Uncollectible receivables and charge-offs started rising in 1995. The Company responded by increasing the interest rate to a hefty 21 percent while at the same time lowering the minimum required monthly payment. Thisà let cardholders continue to ring up purchases on their Sears Cards and also increased interest revenue on outstanding credit balances. To offset the impact of delinquencies, Sears raised late fees and other charges. However the quality of their credit card receivables was still questionable, as by 1997 Sears was a creditor in about one-third of U.S. personal bankruptcies. 1 This case was prepared using public documents, including Sears Annual Reports and a variety of news accounts, including: Debra Sparks, ââ¬Å"Arthur Martinez: Financial Worldââ¬â¢s CEO of the Year,â⬠Financial World, March 25, 1996; John McCormick, ââ¬Å"The Sorry Side of Sears,â⬠Newsweek, February 22, 1999; Joseph Cahill, ââ¬Å"The Softer Side: Searsââ¬â¢s Credit Business May Have Helped Hide Larger Retailing Woes,â⬠Wall Street Journal, July 6, 1999. Neither Sears nor any current or former employee participated document is authorized for use only by XUEYONG LIU in Financial Accounting taught by Yonca Ertimur from This in preparing this case. August 2013 to October 2013. For the exclusive use of X. LIU Sears, Roebuck and Co. A-165 p. 3 The problems went further, however. In January 1997, it was discovered that Sears had illegally coerced payments from cardholders who had sought bankruptcy protection. This resulted in a criminal conviction as well as restitution payments to 187,000 customers. In the end, the scandal cost Sears $475 million in fines, refunds, interest, and legal fees, which the Company charged against income in 1997. ACCOUNTING FOR UNCOLLECTIBLE ACCOUNTS Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) require that accounts receivable be recognized in the balance sheet at net realizable valueââ¬âthatà is, at the amount the company can reasonably expect to collect from its credit customers. Moreover, Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 5 (SFAS 5) requires that an estimated loss from a contingency, such as uncollectible receivables, be accrued by a charge to income if two conditions are met: (1) it is probable that a loss has been incurred; and (2) the amount of the loss can be reasonably estimated. According to their Annual Reports, Sears reported credit card receivables net of an allowance for uncollectible accounts. The allowance was based on ââ¬Å"impaired accounts, historical charge-off patterns, and management judgments.â⬠Until late 1998, ââ¬Å"uncollectible accounts were generally charged off automatically when the customerââ¬â¢s past due balance was eight times the scheduled minimum monthly payment, except that accounts could be charged off sooner in the event of customer bankruptcy.â⬠In 1998, Sears began phasing in a new system in which accounts were charged off ââ¬Å"automatically when the customer fails to make a required payment in each of the eight billing cycles following a missed payment.â⬠In the fourth quarter of 1998, 12 percent of accounts were converted to this system, with the balance being converted in the first and second quarters of 1999. This new system was intended to help Sears better manage its collection efforts by identifying delinquent accounts earlier and enabling better control of uncollectible expenses. It also had the affect of charging off balances earlier than under the previous system. ARE THE PROBLEMS IN THE PAST? As she read the Letter to Shareholders in the 1999 Annual Report, Sarah noticed Martinezââ¬â¢s comments regarding credit: ââ¬Å"In our credit business, we worked tirelessly to strengthen our portfolio quality, reduce our losses, and improve our collection processes.â⬠Sarah knew that the credit business was important to the overall performance of Sears (see Exhibit 4) and that the Companyââ¬â¢s stock price had been affected by credit-related issues (see Exhibit 5). Had Sears truly put its problems behind it? Was the allowance for uncollectible accounts adequate? What should she say to the investment community? junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-32618440127308288682019-11-25T07:44:00.001-08:002019-11-25T07:44:04.005-08:00Wife of Bath-Maistrie EssaysWife of Bath-Maistrie Essays Wife of Bath-Maistrie Paper Wife of Bath-Maistrie Paper Bath bursts onto the scene taking the entire pilgrimage by surprise. Her agenda is to engage in the medieval debate on marriage, confronting the scholarly authority of the church from the standpoint of common experience. Her main emphasis is on mastitis and believes that women should have the upper hand in marriage, making winning and retaining magistrate their main objective. She also refutes canon law which says you are only allowed one husband, distorting and manipulating carefully selected parts of the bible and mythology to support her argument. Justification for having more than one husband, the wife argues, can be found In several Instances In the Bible and argues this point throughout the prologue. She brings up Abraham and Jacob who C]headed wives more then two, slang this as evidence of the consonance of multiple marriages. She also mentions Solomon who had over seven hundred wives and uses this In support of multiple marriages being permissible. These men flare all accounted wise holy men, yet all were married many times without incurring any stigma. She cannot see where God expressly forbid marriage or ordered people to be chaste. Even Saint Paul merely advises those to remain single and chaste who could live happily married, That is to be wedded is no seine; Bet is to be wedded than to brine. She points out that when he spoke of virginity it was only his opinion anyway and Cloistering is no commandment, he was not speaking with divine authority. The way the wife is very selective with information from the Bible and manipulates it to her advantage is typical of her narrative style and she omits parts that contradict her viewpoint. She does not mention that Abraham and Jacob were permitted to marry more than once due to special resistances and that Solomon turned away from the Lord and followed strange gods. She also uses the Samaritan woman who had Evolve husbanded to support her point, contradicting and dismissing the words of Jesus claiming That that he Monte thereby, I Kane Nat seen when he said That Like man that now hath thee is night than housebound. The wife does hold virginity in high regard, Overindulgent Is greet perfection, but admits that It is not for her and it was not intended for everyone, The spas to hem that would live partially; And lordliness, by youre level, that am Nat l. She continues to use religion In her support of sex and marriage as God told Adam and Eve to Go forth and multiply and that is exactly what she Is doing, the world must be populated. She adopts a common sense approach whilst admiring the form of sexual organs. Taking the view that they cannot have been made for nothing, she lists their uses such as Tot known a female from a male and concludes that they were made for both practical and physical purposes, They make Ben for bother. If men and women were provided with different sexual organs It must have been so they can have sex gather as well as the necessary functions such as purgation of urine. Having standalone Tanat sex Ana marriage, multiple marriages In particular, are acceptable, she embarks on her discussion of mastitis. She believes That man shall yelled to his . Ref hire date and this must be true as men Din hire books settee. The wife thinks that this duty should be paid in sex, Noon wherewith should he make his pavement if he en used his sell instrument? She reveals how she obtains mastitis within marriage by using sex as a weapon, Din whoop I wool use my instrument as freely as my Maker hath sent it. She is deliberately confrontational in her further explanation of the concept of mastitis as the Bible says differently, 01 have the power during al my elf upon his proper body, and night he. Manipulating a biblical reference and taking it out of context she supports her opinion, the Apostle Bad our husbanded for to love us well, omitting the section that states wives must obey their husbands. Despite using religion and subverting texts constantly to suit her needs she hypocritically dismisses the Apostles saying After thy text, en after thy rubric, I wool Nat writhe as Michel as a gnat. Through the account of her previous lovers and husbands the wife continues to demonstrate how she has achieved mastitis in her relationships and her motives behind them. Her primary motive for marrying her first four husbands was to secure marital wealth and social status as they were all very wealthy. She wanted them to do their marital duty to her all the time despite the fact that the first three were clearly Detour and Thrall. She admits that having secured their marital wealth she felt no need to DOD longer diligence to wine hire love. She had power over her husbands as he refused to have sex with them unless they did what she wanted and bestirred a lot of pain on them, The penny I died hem and the woo. She complained when she was the guilty party and made their lives unbearable, For as an hors I exude bite and whine. When she eventually marries The Jolly clerk Jacking she is sufficiently wealthy to no longer need to gain anything from the marriage and gives him her possessions. For once the wife does not have mastitis within a relationship as it is Lankan who has the upper hand and he reads her stories from his book to show her owe inferior women are, Oho headed a book that gladly, night and day, for his disport he would red away Yet she managed to gain mastitis and Made him Brenner his book. She got back her independence and control over her husband and Dafter that day they Deaden never debate. The marriage was improved by Jinnis acceptance of his wifes sovereignty. On the basis of Jinnis book she argues the misogyny of scholars and writers, Tit is an impossible that any clerk wool Spike good of wives. She points out that they cannot write objectively and so can dismiss what they say in favor of her own pragmatic doctrine. The knight in the tale is more willing to find out what women want and goes about giving it to them. Having been enlightened by the old woman that Omen desire to have sovereigns as well over hire housebound as hire love, and for to been in mastitis him above, he actually gives her the power in the marriage he is forced into. Convinced of her wisdom he gives her mastitis by letting her decide whether she remains old, ugly and faithful or beautiful with all the shortcomings that accompany it. When she asks the question Ethane have I getter of yow mastitis he accepts that seen Joey s seen Decodes Delightful Ana remains true to ml as teeny Don live In apart ever after. The wifes prologue and tale suggest that there is nothing wrong with multiple marriages and sexual intercourse, however her authority for this is questionable due to the way she distorts and perverts texts in order to prove her point. Marriage is like a battle of the sexes, although the wife clearly does not intend to accept the subordinate position as wives should retain mastitis. It suggests that to give sovereignty to wives is good for both partners in a marriage, although this view may be reached with the bias of self-interest. junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-35564175767080558042019-11-21T15:08:00.001-08:002019-11-21T15:08:02.938-08:00My Theory of Literacy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 wordsMy Theory of Literacy - Essay Example Computer skills are needed in education as well as in the job. What good an individual that can just read and write do in the contemporary organization in which manual work has been replaced with mechanical work? In the past, individuals with an ability to write and read were considered literate because these two skills sufficed to be employed in any organization, but contemporary organizations are way more demanding. The contemporary definition of literacy is incomplete unless the significance of computer skills is acknowledged and set as one of the criteria for judgment of an individual literacy. Charles Bazerman defined literacy in these words, ââ¬Å"Literacy does not require or inexorably lead to any particular development, but it is a powerful tool available for organizing, extending, providing resources for, and transforming all of our social endeavorsâ⬠(Bazerman cited in Goggin). Writing is conventionally associated with creativity. Every piece of writing has to be orig inal or it would be considered as plagiarized. Thus, writing is essentially a creation and the writer is an inventor, but Bazerman does not consider such a person necessarily literate. His definition of literacy requires a literate person to be able to organize, promote, support and transform his/her social efforts using his/her literary skills. All of these functions are achieved with a computer these days. Computer helps organize the data. Programs like Microsoft Excel help not only organize the data, but also perform different kinds of functions upon it. Programs like Corel Draw transform imagination into reality. An in-depth analysis of the computer skills suggests that use of computer does a lot to improve a personââ¬â¢s social and critical analysis skills. ââ¬Å"Many contemporary perspectives on literacy view scripted text as one component of complex acts and practices of written communication that occur in social contextsâ⬠(Goggin). Modern age is characterized by so cial media. Today, writing has evolved so much that it encapsulates a lot of linguistic styles that were unknown to the writers of the past. Old literature is characterized by formality. Modern literature is informal to the maximum limits. In the past, there used to be abbreviations for long words. Nowadays, there are abbreviations for phrases. For example, ââ¬Å"also known asâ⬠is written as ââ¬Å"akaâ⬠, ââ¬Å"laughing out loudâ⬠is written as ââ¬Å"lolâ⬠. These are only two of the hundreds of abbreviations that chatting on social media websites has given birth to. Today, an individual who is able to write but does not understand or use these abbreviations in the scripts is as illiterate as anyone in the past who could not write. These abbreviations and such other modifications of literature are a result of the time-based modification in the assumptions and values of people. Robert Scholes had realized the importance of modern and emerging linguistic pattern s in the writing back in 1985. He expressed his realization in these words: What students need from us . . . now is the kind of knowledge and skill that will enable them to make sense of their worlds, to determine their own interests, both individual and collective, to see through the manipulations of all sorts of texts in all sorts of media, and to express their own views in some appropriate manner. (Scholes cited in Schwartz). Of the two texts, Schwartz has presented a more rational analysis of the concept of literacy by emphasizing upon the need to junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-79402066692445216622019-11-20T14:57:00.001-08:002019-11-20T14:57:04.322-08:00Kottak presents the concept of the feminization of poverty EssayKottak presents the concept of the feminization of poverty - Essay Example These include (1) the growth and emergence of female/women-headed households, (2) inequalities between households and discrimination against girls and women and, and (3) economic policies that lean heavily towards neo-liberalism, including structural changes and transitions in post-socialist markets (Kottak 82). Kottak argues that increasing visibility of poverty among women is deeply rooted in political economies, cultural trends and demographic patterns. He states that there are huge regional variations in the financial and economic status of women-headed households, and this is primarily influenced by womenââ¬â¢s access to property and employment, political regimes and social policies. Kottak also states that inequalities between households have been found to worsen the state of womenââ¬â¢s rights in terms of their vulnerability (105). This manifests in form of inequalities in resource allocation to households and a lack of decision-making in important spheres like legal codes, public policy and development. Inadequate access to property rights (in land), employment, illiteracy, poor wages, childbearing, early marriages have also proved detrimental to the empowerment of women and the realization of their rights. The expansion of female/women-headed households has been found to be influential in the exacerbation of womenââ¬â¢s poverty, and although this has not been proved in most parts of the world, the United States offers a stark example of what may eventually be the situation in a majority of countries. In the US, feminization of poverty is closely linked to the growth of female-headed households especially among low-income females in terms of insufficien t social support (Kottak 74) It has been established that neoliberal economic policies have a tendency and potential to induce poverty and hence have adverse effects on girls and women. junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-47172917678695473972019-11-18T12:14:00.001-08:002019-11-18T12:14:02.766-08:00Portfolio Assessment and Revision Plan Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 wordsPortfolio Assessment and Revision Plan - Essay Example One of the most immediate changes I see to my writing is an improvement in the organization. In my first essay, there was not necessarily a logical flow from one point to another. I essentially used two disconnected paragraphs that both spoke about the article in question, without actually combining together to form a cohesive argument. This can be seen very clearly by the topic sentence of my second paragraph, where I stated that ââ¬Å"Also tackled in this article is the use of ââ¬Å"Framing theoryâ⬠as a guide in differentiating the media practices in China.â⬠While this did describe a thing the article did, it did not actually connect that well with what I had done in my previous paragraphs. In my later essays, however, I paid much more attention to organization. I believe that one of the things that were most helpful to me was segmenting my essay into various sections, such as a ââ¬Å"literature reviewâ⬠, ââ¬Å"comparison between languages and so forthâ⬠. I did this in each of my two later essays. This forced me to structure my essay in a more cohesive way, with each particular subject having a clear relationship to the thesis or main point I was trying to make and kept each part of the paragraph clearly related to a specific aspect of that argument. I believe I will not have to use these types of headings as much in the future, but they were still certainly useful in keeping me on track in terms of organization. I believe the second major change that I made in my writing is the development of a simpler, clearer style. My first essay had some relatively vague language in it, especially in the introduction. The opening of my first essay, which stated that ââ¬Å"with great power, comes great responsibilityâ⬠worked well as a hook, but did not tell the reader anything about what I would be writing about. In my subsequent essays I became much more direct, launching immediately into my topic of discussion, and keeping my sentences short, precise, and toà the point. à junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1361926912018513639.post-78102839363873797862019-11-16T00:46:00.001-08:002019-11-16T00:46:10.687-08:00Pushing Boundaries in Film and LiteraturePushing Boundaries in Film and Literature Assessment Task: Identify and discuss how literature and film are tools of transgression in Tropic of Cancer (novel), Lolita (novel) and Modern Times (film). To discover the complete horizon of a societys symbolic values, it is also necessary to map out its transgressions, interrogate its deviants, discern phenomena of rejection and refusal, and circumscribe the silent mouths that unlock upon underlying knowledge and implicit. ~Marcel Detienne, Dionysos Slain (cited in Oberoi 1992, p.363) Pushing boundaries have always been a major concern in art, whether it is literature, film, music, or painting. This paper will focus on two of the major art forms which are literature and film. They are used by two of the greatest authors of the twentieth century, Vladimir Nabokov and Henry Miller, and one of the most significant figures in the film industry, Charlie Chaplin, as tools of transgression that interrogate the boundaries and constraints created by society. According to Julian Wolfreys (2008, pp.1-3) transgression is the very pulse that constitutes our identities. Transgression is the act of breaking a law, committing a crime or sin, doing something illegal, or otherwise acting in some manner proscribed by the various forms or institutions of Law in societies, whether secular or religious, all of which have histories and which themselves are mutable, self-translating. Additionally, Wolfreys explains that the transgressive actions or attitudes of a character can frequently be worked out not through the characters identity solely, but also in the form (or let us call it identity) of the literary text in question. In Vladimir Nabokovs novel Lolita and Henry Millers Tropic of Cancer, sexuality is used as a tool of transgression to challenge the limits of socially accepted convention. In Charlie Chaplins film Modern Times, the industrialization is used to emphasize the danger that modern technology brings upon people by transforming them into working units, and that machinery is used solely for profit. The conflation of Millers sexually saturated novel, Nabokovs seductive composition, and Chaplins instigative film form the perfect study object to explore the nature of transgression, which is perceived in both novels and the film not as intentionally morally corrupt, but as an opposition to social convention. The tools used by Miller, Nabokov, and Chaplin, in order to convey their visions, are the language and the power of imagery. In Lolita (1955), the readers are tempted, seduced, and simultaneously threatened by Humberts manipulation and aesthetic transcendence where he has only words to play with (Nabokov 1980, p.32). Humberts story is a confession composed of words that are able to seduce the reader in the same way as he seduces Lolita. The threat of Humberts words is that, unconsciously, the reader may fall for his confession which, as Vanity Fair (LA Times 1998) argues, is the only convincing love story of our century. Moreover, the readers can take part in the novels action through its imagery when Humbert invites them to participate in the scene (Nabokov, p.56) where he is about to seduce his nymphet. Lolita nonchalantly places her legs across Humberts lap while showing him an image of a surrealist painter relaxing, supine, on a beach, and near him, likewise supine, a plaster replica of Venus di Milo, half-buried in sand (p.58). As Humbert perceives everything through the lens of art, including and esp ecially his Lolita, she can be associated with Venus di Milo who is Humberts ideal of beauty; not as a mature woman though, but as a young girl whom Humbert loves so much that he desires her sexually. Karshan (Boyle Evans 2008, p.98) argues that Lolita exposes the sinister potential of the cult of the child in post-Romantic art: that it protects children by making them lovable, but by making them too lovable risks making them desirable, and so places them in danger. While Lolita sits in his lap, Humbert cannot resist the urge to masturbate, himself admitting that he was in a state of excitement bordering on insanity (Nabokov, p.58). Although no explicit language was used to portray the actual scene, it should not be forgotten that the reason of Humberts delicious distention (p.59) is a twelve year old girl. Humberts assertion that he had done nothing to her [Lolita] [and that] Lolita had been safety solipsized (p.59), moreover, that nothing could prevent him from repeating the scene, comes in direct opposition to Karshans observations that children who fall prey to adults pervert desires, are in great danger. Wolfreys (p.14) points out that the novels, plays or films seek to work through the paradox that one transgresses because ones survival is threatened by what, to many, is convention or normative behavior. That which is considered to be an important feature of the nature of transgression is the way in which it affirms the limitlessness into which it leaps (Foucault 1977, p.35), in this instance, of seducing the reader and the viewer where, if [they] do not watch out, the real murderer may turn out to be, to [their] disgust, artistic originality (Nabokov 1980, p.311). In Lolita, originality is the one that annihilate convention therefore artistic originality can be referred to as destroyer of convention. AlthoughHumbert is a murderer and a paedophile who, besides words, uses also physical violence to subjugate Lolita: In fact [I] hurt her rather badly (ibid, p.203), and rapes her countless times, he is identified with artistic originality. Through originality and artistic innovation, Humbert succeeds to project his techniques of rhetorical seduction not only on Lolita, but on the reader too: I faked interest by bringing my head so close that [Lolitas] hair touched my temple and her arm brushed my cheek as she wiped her lips with her wrist (p.57). The affiliation of originality with criminality can be seen as a tool of transgression. Furthermore, the reader is invited to raise ethical questions, though, at the same time they are rejected through parody in the same way as physical comedy is used and parodised in Humberts struggle to open the pharmacys door: [à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦] in front of the first drugstore, I saw with what melody of relief! Lolitas fair bicycle waiting for her. I pushed instead of pulling, pulled, pushed, pulled, and entered (p.204), as well as romanticism and romantic love is: [à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦] my Lolita [à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦] stretched towards me two bare arms, raised one knee: Carry me upstairs, please. I feel sort of romantic tonight (pp.205-206). The role reversal of the seducer it actually blindfolds Humbert into following Lolitas machinations for their second journey. In this scene, Lolita is empowered hence she transforms into a twelve year old girl-temptress and thus putting an entirely new spin on the nightmare of child rape (Winchell 2002, p.329). At this stage, Lolita holds complete power not only over Humberts lustful body, but over his imagination too. In his mad love for Lolita, Humbert, a thirty-seven year old adult does not realize that not the role that she played in the school play has trained her into certain affectations, but Humbert himself and her longing to escape from him. Millers Tropic of Cancer (1934)breaks with the English literary tradition (Shapiro 1961, p.xii), its tools of transgression being the obscene language as well as the imagery used to portray the chronicle of a man who is happy (p.xi), who reaches his aspiration of becoming an artist. The novel is considered an important milestone in the development of the autobiographical novel (Shute 2002, online) from the point of view that the artist who, through the power of graphic descriptions, can shock and push the reader out of the literary complacency (ibid). Frequently, at a first glance, the ideas presented in the novel may seem trivial: We have evolved a new cosmogony of literature, Boris and I. It is to be a new Bible-The Last Book. [à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦] After us not another book (Miller 1961, p.26), though through a close reading the depth of their meaning have a tremendous impact with a new sort of understanding. The suggestion that a whole new world could be created through the power of t he written word signifies the idea of an apocalypse and the rebirth of the world itself. As Foucault (1977, p.30) argues, Profanation in a world which no longer recognizes any positive meaning in the sacred-is this not more or less what we may call transgression? The creation of a new Bible which instigates to rape, to murder (Miller 1961, p.27) may appear as a criminal offense to the humanity itself, though it is rather a direct affront to the contemporary way of life. Miller does not write about the world, Miller is showing the world as it exists (Bursey 2015, p.164). The sacred was and still is considered to be that which the profane should not reach. On the whole, sacred is associated with religion, therefore sacredness [à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦] denotes religiosity (Jenks 2003, p.29). However, in a world where the form of the sacred has become more diluted thus less recognisable, transgression as the nature of the social reaction is just a mere attempt to restore the common values and n ormative constraints. In Tropic of Cancer it is more than obvious that obscenity which most often connotes excess, violence and transgression (Mavor cited in Mey 2007, p.5) is used as a violation of the aforementioned normative constraints, thus obscenity can be seen as a violation of the societal boundaries. In Tropic of Cancer Miller reveals and implies sexual purity not as real eroticism rather he divulges sexuality just as it is: a bone in [his] prick six inches long [to] ream out every wrinkle in [Tanias] cunt (Miller 1961, p.5). Throughout the novel Miller does not try to conceal the events that take place in his life, contrariwise he writes his real life experiences of how he walks the streets, how he tries to find money, food, how he meets his friends, how he sleeps with whores, and even getting an erection looking at the dumb statues (p.16). Millers literature juggles on a string between sexuality and civilization, his literature it transgresses the limits of decency and it takes the freedom to s ay that which is considered to be taboo. Society does not allow openly expressed sexuality through words, as such expression of freedom might undermine the societys authority and thus societys structure itself. Although there have always been huge controversy on the sexual topics of Tropic of Cancer, the relationship of its author with the traditions of literature and art cannot be denied. The development of the artist is one the novels major themes, thus art is implied as being the artists way of living, and if sex and sexuality smoothes the artists path to fulfilling his destiny, then so be it, Nabokovs (p.257) words that sex is but the ancilla of art might be the a reasonable solution when trying to understand Millers world. Modern Times (1936), with the foreword: A story of industry of individual enterprise ~ humanity crusading in the pursuit of happiness (min. 1.07) is considered to be a comedic masterpiece written and directed by Charlie Chaplin. Although it is a fusion of slapstick, which is comedy based on deliberately clumsy actions and humorously embarrassing events:slapstick humour (Oxford Dictionaries), and satire, the film deals with major themes that encompass the turmoil of the 1930s American society, such as The American Dream, the effects of the Great Depression, mechanization and mass production, anarchy and rebellion, poverty, food, and hunger. By 1936Chaplin was already well known for his film directing, some of his most important films are The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931), though Modern Times is Chaplins first overtly political film with dangerously meaningful (Nugent 1936) intertitles and imagery. Chaplin is using intertitles, the sound being substituted by the exaggerated character of the gesture and the reliance on miming that leads to an emphasis on acting. The opening scene of the film is showing a flock of white sheep being guided by an unseen force (min. 1.20) towards an unseen location, with a single black sheep among them symbolising The Tramp, the anarchist of the society who resents control. The scene is complemented by the marching music that leads to the next scene of the film showing a mass of people going to work (min. 1.30), driven by the same unseen force. The metaphor implemented by the association of people with domesticated animals that obey their master has a great impact on viewers, its statement being that people are controlled by industrialization and mechanization therefore they must accept, obey, and let themselves be controlled by the ruler, and that is the minority of the system that creates the rules. On the concept that, in order to provide for a living, humanity is forced to adjust to mechanization and machines, in the same way the tyranny of the technology is forcing people to become robotic machines themselves. The theme of mechanization that enslaves the man is emphasised in the first section of the film where the workers are being monitored (min. 2.39) by the President of the Electro Steel Corp. factory through giant monitors. Furthermore, the people must work at a pace imposed by nothing else than a machine, though the one who commands the speeding up of the working pace is the factorys Director: Section five, speed her up! 401 (min. 2.59). The working scene is filled with comedy, though when The Tramps tool gets stuck on a nut he cannot manage to release it on time, thus his coworker, by mistake, hits The Tramps hand with the hammer. At this point the whole working process must be stopped, the supervisor intervenes, and when The Tramp reports his bulky colleague, the latte r kicks him as a punishment. It is worth mentioning that The Tramp does not show any fear, contrariwise he hits his colleague back (min. 4.35), his gesture signifying him fighting not only his coworker, but the whole system too. Once again the Director orders the speeding up of the working pace (min. 4.46) which results in The Tramp having a sort of a breakdown and begins to screw everything he sees, from the secretarys skirt buttons to even the comic scene when he chases a woman who has buttons on her dress, on the street (min. 16.15). You are just about to sit on the patio to enjoy a steaming hot cup of coffee, when you look to over and see the most disgusting sight ever. He looks absolutely mountainous; there are rolls upon rolls suffocating his body. Food is flying everywhere, lettuce is being launched through the air, and there are pieces of meat all over the table and floor. You are astounded to see that he is trying to snag his third burger. You then walk away utterly shocked that someone can let their dog get that fat. That is right what I was describing was about a canine, not a human being, which is what I bet you thought while reading the description. Society and the media have put this picture into our heads that obese people sit at restaurants all day stuffing their faces with food, and are extremely lazy. As it turns out, this depiction of obese people is wrong, and there is more involved in obesity than you think. There are a hundred causes as to why a person is obese, but thanks to society and the media we only think of the one reason. In fact, some of the common causes of obesity are diseases. There are many syndromes that could cause obesity but the most common ones are hypothyroidism, Cushingââ¬â¢s disease, Prader-Willi syndrome, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. As society frequently passes judgment on obese people they do not stop to think that a disease could be the cause for their obesity. The first genetic disorder that is involved in causing obesity is called hypothyroidism. This disease is fairly common as it affects more than forty percent of Americans (Lowrance, 2009). In order to explain how this disease causes obesity, I will first explain what t... ...ypothyroidism, which is caused by an underactive thyroid gland. Fifteen million have a disease called Cushingââ¬â¢s disease, which happens when the body is overexposed to cortisol. Prader-Willi affects thirty thousand, and it caused by a bad fifteenth chromosome. Fifty percent of women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome are obese. This condition is caused by ââ¬Å"insulin resistance and biochemical signaling.â⬠All of these people affected by these disorders are obese because of something that they could not control, genetics, not overeating and laziness. So please, next time you see an overly obese person think first before you judge them. The quote said by Adelle Davis perfectly sums up my argument, ââ¬Å" To say that obesity is caused by merely consuming too many calories is like saying that the only cause of the American Revolution was the Boston Tea Party,â⬠(Davis, n.d). junephillihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15460539069163732109noreply@blogger.com0
